Description
We have an exciting opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician to join our Pharmacy team based at The Kent Clinic.
The post holder will:
- Participate in the safe, timely and accurate dispensing, checking and supply of medication to all patient types and departments
- Contribute to a high quality clinical pharmacy service at ward and department level
- Undertake medicines reconciliation for all inpatients admitted for treatment, ensuring resolution of unidentified discrepancies
- Act as mentor and supervisor for the Pharmacy Assistant, including the NVQ Level 2 course where necessary
- Participate in the accurate receipt, storage and supply of controlled drugs
- Take an active role in the training of other healthcare staff on medicines management topics
- Procure medicines in the most cost-effective manner to help control drug expenditure
- Review and update departmental standard operating procedures
- Participate in data collection, audit programmes and presentations as part of the continual quality improvement agenda of the pharmacy department
Key Result Areas
- Competently dispense and check all prescription types, including controlled drugs
- Errors (and near miss errors) minimised within the dispensary setting
- Identify and prioritise unintentional discrepancies through effective medicines reconciliation, reducing the risk of missed doses and medication errors
- Ensure patient’s own drugs are safe to use during their hospital admission
- Help to control drug expenditure through effective medicines management practices and procurement
- Adapt and refine the retail offering of the Pharmacy department when required
- Take an active role in training Pharmacy and other healthcare staff
- Assist in the development and review of Pharmacy standard operating procedures
- Effective supervision of the Pharmacy Assistant, undertaking competency assessments where required
- Review and update of departmental stock lists to optimise medication availability and minimise waste
- Undertake data collection and perform audits related to medicines management and customer / patient satisfaction as required
Skills and Experience
- NVQ Level 3 Pharmacy Technician qualification
- Registration with GPhC and evidence of CPD
- At least 2-3 years of post-qualification experience
- Experience of working within a healthcare team
- Experience of working in a busy dispensary environment
- Previous hospital experience is desirable but not essential
- Experience of supervising other staff is desirable
- Experience and skills in using computer programs and harnessing technology to enhance the Pharmacy service
- Previous experience of audit and data collection
